Ahoy mates. Is your summer fairing well? I sure hope so. I hope all your endeavors are as smooth sailing as I tend to make porno-making sound, in some of my recent posts.

I have mentioned in the past that it’s not always so smooth, and in fact at times it downright sucks. Perhaps I’ll enlighten those who are interested with some facts about what it takes to make a porn scene run smoothly, based not only on my personal experience but also on what some friends in the business have shared as well.

Let me start by saying that for the most part I have been extremely fortunate to work with professional staff, scene partners, and directors… for the most part. I’ve also worked with some egomaniacs, dark souls, and folks really lacking in the intelligence department. I’d rather not name anybody, because I don’t want news getting around that Adam Ramzi writes bad things about people he works with. I prefer to name drop when I have good things to say about people in the industry. So I’ll get more into the hows and whys rather than the whos.

I’ve also gotten some help from the likes of Dirk Caber, Boomer Banks, Killian James, Brian Bonds, Josh West, Bennett Anthony, and Colt Rivers, all of whom were kind enough to share with me some of their ideas on what can really add to or take away from the experience of making porn. The most common answer? CHEMISTRY.

I know this seems like an obvious one, but it goes a little deeper than just whether there is chemistry between the scene partners or not. So often the guys who work together in scenes are guys who have never met each other before. Sometimes they’re encouraged to get to know each other beforehand, and this can go any which way as I’ve detailed in prior posts about scenes with Tommy Defendi, Joe Parker, and Seven Dixon. Those were all examples of chemistry, each very different from the other.

This came fresh off the heels of my first scene with Christian Wilde, which went so well that we were finished in like three hours — which is really quite a feat in the world of studio porn. So I realized, after trying to at least establish camaraderie with this guy thinking “we’re in this together” and getting very little back, I decided I was just going to use this guy. He had a nice hole, and I was going to destroy it. I did it for me. So, imagine my surprise when the director of the scene (our fourth together at that point) approached me during a break and said, “Honey, this is your best work yet.”

Being surprised that this scene over any of the ones mentioned above was getting better work out of me, I told one of the grips what the director said. The grip said, “Sometimes when the chemistry isn’t there, the performance really shows up.” This would explain a lot of things in the future. But from then on, I decided I was going to try and maintain chemistry and STILL give an excellent performance in future scenes. I’m not sure if I’ve always been successful, but that scene served as a marker for me, if anything. A reminder.

Boomer and Brian both mentioned hygiene, as well. I haven’t had the worst luck with this yet, though I am pretty certain that in a recent scene I ate bad butt, which led to a weekend spent on the toilet. You know that’s a thing, right? Apparently it’s a thing. You eat bad butt, you get a 48-hour stomach virus. Try not to swallow when you bury half your face in a stranger’s asshole. Lesson learned.

Killian gave me advice that it’s good to reach out beforehand to your scene partner to find out a bit about what may or may not work to keep said partner turned on throughout filming. For example, for me the nipple thing is like… extremely important. Crazy amounts important. Without my nipples, I’d be nothing. Well, I’m sure that’s not true, but I am very grateful to be as hard-wired as I am, because if a man knows what to do with my nipples, I will be exactly the sexual sex piggy that is needed of me on set.

As you will see in The Biggest Catch (which premiered today on NakedSword), Killian and I were able to connect not only as people, or as professionals, but also having the nipple thing in common was a fantastic treat. The professional aspect of this scene, however, was one that I will use as a barometer for other scenes in the future. Killian knew his angles, how to find his light, when to use dirty talk, and how to use his body.

I am stoked to see this scene, not only because I am always curious to see how a scene turns out depending on the circumstances of the shoot, but also because I want to test the theory of how a scene turns out if the circumstances of the shoot are particularly positive. Over the weekend there were not one but two DVD release parties in San Francisco for NakedSword’s big summer sex comedy The Biggest Catch featuring star Adam Ramzi, Raging Stallion Exclusive Boomer Banks, production assistant and NakedSword Exclusive Bray Love (who has a couple cameos in the movie), director mr. Pam, and hostess extraordinaire Sister Roma.

We showed you the first episode preview and an exclusive behind the scenes clip last week — and this Wednesday you’ll get to see the episode that caused all that drama at that Castro restaurant back in April, where Killian James gets fucked by Casey Moore on a patio — until they were so rudely interrupted!

First, this past Friday, at The Lookout in the Castro, the NakedSword gang judged a Biggest Catch contest in which gay men of all ages came on stage to talk about why their partner/trick/friend was the “biggest catch.” Various evidence was given, as mr. Pam says, from the 22 people who entered, “everything from ‘he has a big ol dick’ to ‘he helped me through cancer’ to ‘we’ve been married 8 years’.”

In the end, though, the first place winner (as finally decided by audience cheers) was Jason Hinson and his mother Janet, who won a $400 gift certificate to Hotels.com. As Sister Roma tells us, “Jason showed us photos of his mom flagging at Ruby Skye, dancing on stage at BeatBox, deep-throating a cock-shaped cookie, and described her as ’73 years old, 89 pounds, and 100% awesome.’ The crowd cheered and all four judges unanimously agreed that Jason definitely has the Biggest Catch!”

It’s Tuesday of Folsom week, 2015. Every year I look forward to this weekend, as several friends of mine and I consider it “Gay Christmas” — an event around which many friends from across the country flock to San Francisco to play kinky dress-up, go to parties, and let their hair down. It is a sexually explorative weekend, and every year is full of surprises. It’s like summer camp in the city, and the adventure is always unexpected and wonderful. You just never know where you’ll end up, at any time, day or night.

Tonight, I’m in a hotel in Las Vegas, having finished filming a scene for Raging Stallion’s Hard Friction merely hours ago, my first with director Steve Cruz in nearly six months. Other facts about this week: I’ve been waiting to hear from a loverfriend whether or not he tested positive for an STI, to know how I should move forward myself, the iPhone’s new iOS 9 came out in all its glitchy glory, leaving my Twitter and Periscope useless, I had more of a party weekend than I probably should have considering the shoot today and Folsom weekend ahead, the relationship situation I have found myself in has muddied its communication lately, and while I was mid-shoot today I discovered that a series of unfortunate events ended up leaving my living situation in San Francisco with a big, scary question-mark.

Now here I am, treating myself in the hotel bar with a martini, waiting for a sandwich, and realizing something I hate myself for even thinking: Mercury is in retrograde. When people would talk about Mercury being in retrograde, I would roll my eyes a bit and say “Instead of blaming Mercury, maybe this is an opportunity to look deeper into your own bullshit.” Several friends have retorted in the past, saying that in terms of technology and communication the Mercury retrograde thing is no joke.

The shoot today, for all intents and purposes, ended up going fairly well despite a few things going against it. The scene partner was sweet and handsome, though not entirely my type, and had much trouble with English. He apologized with his adorable accent repeatedly, and made up for it with his enthusiasm and his professionalism. My boner was moodier than I expected, and I may have lost about ten pounds in sweat during the course of the scene. Steve and I only snapped at each other once, not something that happens usually, though we were able to recover from it like pros, finish up, and address it swiftly and like adults afterwards.

The scene was finally over, I loaded up on snacks from the kitchen so that I didn’t feel like I needed to leave my hotel before waking up to get on the return flight, and came back to the hotel to sit down with the packaged salad I’d been waiting to eat for four hours.

Well, I’m not done trying. I can’t be a star in this business if I let shit like this get to me. Fuck you, Mercury. I’m calling a meeting with the pups to sort out communication. I’m calling a meeting with the roommates so we can get this shit sorted. Folsom will be what it is, always – an unpredictable mess of fun. Let’s do this.

Two weeks later: I’m on an airplane with one of the pups, heading back home from Maui, to San Jose, after a few days in Honolulu (work) and Maui (play), pushing it with this delayed departure (hello, we missed our plane to SFO yesterday by literally two minutes), as the two of us have to book it from San Jose to San Francisco in order to make it just in time for our Man Francisco burlesque show — an evening we’d promised not to miss. We are expecting the uber car to make it outside the venue no less than five minutes before show time, giving us time to slam down some water, get dressed, and hit the stage.

The past two weeks have included, intermittently, some of the greatest joy I’ve felt as well as some of the most excruciating relationship and personal despair. The trick about being in this position — working in the psych field, balancing that with parties, porn shoots, and alternative expressions of love — is that it is often fun, at times frustrating, and a constant reminder that we are “doing things differently.”

It’s this reminder that I need every once in a while to, at first, shake me to the core and make me anxious about the choices I’ve made, before I remember that they are, in fact, the CHOICES I’VE MADE. A lifestyle like this isn’t handed to you, and then you say “Oh great, let’s just manage this for a while.” We work for this, and then it becomes a practice. Like going to the gym, or dealing properly with stupid people.

Folsom was a lot of work and a lot of fun, the week following was playing catch up before a couple of the boys and I were flown to Hawaii to work a couple parties for friends of ours who asked us to join them at their new club in Honolulu.

I am learning that managing not only your own emotions but the emotions of your loved ones is particularly difficult during a time of such unconventional busy-ness. I came close to throwing in the towel so many times, but have found myself in this weird place, on a plane to a city I know nothing about, with only hope on my side that we will make this show and I will recoup some of the financial losses of the weekend via tips.

Mercury is out of retrograde in a couple days. Juggling responsibilities can bring out your vulnerable side, which can make you come across as needy, uncaring, resentful, and weak if you’re not careful. The only things we have left that will pull us out of these ruts are communication, patience, and gratitude.

Luckily, what I will remember from these past two weeks won’t be the hell of missing flights, of feeling misunderstood, of feeling less than, of the hit my self-esteem took, or of almost losing my apartment, etc. I instead will remember the joy, the sex, the good fortune, the love, and the thrilling danger of all the shit I get myself up to these days, as well as the opportunity to take what I can from all the negative shit that happened and learn from them. Let’s keep our hearts and minds open, remain grateful for what we’ve got, give back to the universe where we can, and crush the rest of 2015.

And watch out for Mercury. It can be a real bitch.

Once again, the resurgence of a semi-regularly trending topic: Within the last few weeks, not one, but two gay porn actors have taken their own lives — Zac Stevens first, and very soon after Dimitri Kane.

Let me be honest, first and foremost. I had never heard of these guys before the news of their death. The gay porn industry is a far reaching, globally operational force, and there are thousands of guys who have, at least, dabbled in the art of fucking on camera. Some names are farther reaching than others, of course, depending on a number of factors. Big studios vs. small studios, exclusive contracts vs. free agents, condom vs. bareback, vanilla vs. kink, etc., and all the gray area in between.

…and we have all been watching for decades.

I have read the comments under the Queerty and Str8upGayPorn posts announcing the deaths of these men. And it’s kind of nuts: There is still such an element of hate for the men who commit their bodies to the internet for your viewing pleasure. An attitude of, “Well, what do you expect when you go into porn?” Like porn and drug use go hand in hand, like porn is the self-destructive gateway act of self-loathing, lost gay boys who have nothing else — though the industry is no stranger to lost boys, they’re fewer than you may think.

My first thought was to admonish this kind of commenter talk and blame consumers of porn for fueling these fires of negativity, but I know that oftentimes there is truth to these judgments. But why is there so little support or sympathy among porn fans for the sometimes troubled lives performers lead? Is it that putting sexuality on display is still seen as an inherently self-destructive, shameful thing, and anyone who dabbles in it deserves whatever self-hate they feel? Isn’t it possible, too, that reading negative comments and tweets about oneself could push someone in the industry over the edge if he’s already emotionally unstable?

Chemical, clinical depression enters the lives of many people, and the gay community has had a long love affair with substance abuse that extends well beyond the world of sex work and porn. (In the case of Arpad Miklos, who took his own life in 2013 at age 45, depression appeared to be the main culprit.) It’s natural, though, for those left alive to want to distance themselves from a suicide and believe they could never get so low themselves.

Part of my own goal in doing porn, and especially in writing about it, is to share with readers the fact that there is so much more going on with some of us, and so much more going on in our heads when we tread these uncertain territories, than just getting off and making a buck. It’s a scary thing deciding to do porn, and if you don’t have the emotional wherewithal to handle what often comes with the territory, you are going to have a rough time.

And no, again, I don’t mean drug use. What I mean by “what comes with the territory” includes this weird cross-section of the scrutiny of strangers paired with their hungry, lustful eyes, waiting for what more you can give them. I mean this shame that comes with baring one’s sexuality and body to the world and getting not much more than a paycheck for it. I mean this constant feeling of “Am I ever going to be good enough for some of these people?” Or even “Am I doing it right?”

There are many reasons one may choose to try porn. To make a blanket statement about a need for validation is not enough, because we all can use validation once in a while. I’d be stupid not to admit that. What I have learned in the past three years, however, is that there is much more to it than simple ego-stroking with some performers.

The validation doesn’t come with merely the commitment of one’s sexualized image to film and photo (and the all powerful internet). The emotions around sex work can get complex. I have watched performers fall apart on set because they feel like they are not being given enough attention from crew members and production coordinators, let alone their scene partner. Crippling insecurity is not a good look for anyone, let alone someone in the sex work business — it rears its head in very nasty and sometimes scary ways. Especially when it comes from young, lost boys who feel they have nowhere to go but to sex work, or from aging porn actors who may feel there is nothing left when their shelf life has come to an end.

There is also a HUGE network of support around the industry of gay porn, so I’m not going to sit here and say this work is always difficult and surrounded by negative bullshit. The bigger picture issue here — whether it’s between performers, on or off set, or coming from commenters and consumers — is that the gay community has a sad tendency of always wanting to tear each other down.

Some of the comments I have seen are absolutely despicable, but some of the talk I’ve heard on sets about other performers is just as damaging and mean-spirited. And it’s people in the industry, often, who gleefully take part in these Twitter wars and verbal massacres of each other, so everyone is guilty here.

One day, this country’s Puritan view on sexual openness and exploration is going to change. It is changing. The people who mistreat performers (whether within or outside of the industry) are only projecting their own views on sexuality and the sex work industry when they do so. Jealousy is too small a word to describe the insidiousness of what can happen in the porn world.

On my Titan set this week, I learned a very valuable lesson after long discussions with the production team about what we’ve experienced with certain performers: Do NOT get into porn to “get right.” It will not make you happy. Go into it knowing who you are and what you want, and it will be a much more pleasant experience. If this reaches even one hopeful performer, to prevent them from the disappointment that may come, I will be happy. Porn is not worth it if it isn’t bringing you joy.

Suicide is not fucking funny. And it’s not fair. And it’s not the answer. If the industry is toxic for you, then find a way out. I feel for these performers, and their families and friends, and I want all my brothers and sisters in the industry to know that if they need someone to talk to, we are here and we are listening. Reach out to someone.

RIP, to all the men who have taken their own lives in recent years. Here’s a shoutout to Arpad Miklos, who was one of my favorites, and who I thought was so brave to be a part of this beautiful project, just months before ending his own life.
